Why Zinc Supplements Are Good For You

By Neil Butterfield

How many essential minerals that should be part of a balanced diet can you name? If you know of several then the likelihood is that one of them is zinc. It is perhaps one of the most publicised because it is one of the most common, or used to be before the top soils became depleted of nutrients. As a result, foodstuffs were unable to provide zinc in as large quantities as they used to. Unfortunately for us all, that meant that we had to go elsewhere to find our daily recommended intake. Zinc supplements soon proved to be the answer to this nutritional problem.

Functions

Zinc is so important to the body that without it, we would not be able to function properly. It helps the cells work at their best. Below is a partial list, although zinc does much more:

Zinc can help to boost your immunity because it actively encourages the body to build up resistance to all sorts of illnesses and ailments, from the common cold to the chest infection to more serious illnesses like chicken pox and measles. Those individuals that take zinc supplements and get their daily recommended intake on a regular basis are generally healthier than those individuals that do not.

Zinc also helps in enzyme activity within the body. It actually helps to facilitate cell division so that the body can perform protein and DNA synthesis.

Reproductive health, metabolism, and controlling sugar levels to prevent diabetes, zinc does all of this and more. It's so crucial to life that a healthy life without it is impossible.

Because of its bacterial fighting ability, zinc supplements are commonly used as a natural way to treat acne. It also helps you have healthy, glowing skin.

Supplements and Intake.

It is important that we consume foods with zinc in them and take zinc supplements on a regular basis because there is no known major storage point of zinc in the body. Traces of it are found within the bones and the muscles of the body but we have to keep replenishing our levels daily in order to remain healthy. Depending on your age and gender, you may need up to 15mg a day in your diet.

Even though most people reach for a pill to get their zinc, this hardly the best choice. This is because most pills only give you about 10% of your daily recommended allowance. Shocked? Don't be. When you take a pill it has to be broken down in your digestive system before it can be used. However, the zinc particles in a liquid ionic mineral supplement are already broken down as far as they can be. Without this extra step, your body can use the zinc almost instantly. That means you get the amount you should be getting. Ultimately, your body will thank you. - 17268
