Manage Your Kids to Eat Fish Once and For All

By Michael Byrd

Have you ever considered yourself committing child abuse even once in your life? This does not mean beating your child or whatever way you may describe it. Because if not giving your children a regular dose of fish is a form of abuse, then you are guilty.

You are not excused just because you don't like fish. You are old enough to know the consequences of your choices. Your child is different. He does not know what he's missing if he does not eat fish. But you do, and it's so inconsiderate on your part to deprive them with this privilege.

Don't linger on the guilt. Just think about it - you want to do something about the situation. The only problem is that you don't know how.

Based from experience, I can say that the only way to have your kids do what you say is to act it up on your own. That is, teach by example. Children tend to imitate what their parents do and this is manifested until they are in their teenage years.

At an early age, the best way to teach your children to eat fish is to start eating it too. You might not want its fishy taste, but that's because the fish you have probably bought is not fresh or was not prepared properly or you are not yet used to the flavor. You can do something about it. Here's how:

People who don't like fish used to complain about its fishy taste. Of course, fish will never taste like chicken but that doesn't mean it has to be fishy. If it does, it means it is not fresh. So always go for the freshest fish there is in the market.

Find the right recipe. If you go for fried foods, have your fish fried. If you like the soups, then make a fish soup. It's just a matter of knowing what you want and using fish as your main ingredient. In this way, you and your family will get to like the taste of fish because you have prepared them the way you have always wanted your food to be.

Studies show that it is best to work on mild tasting fishes first. Don't start with the salmon even if it has the highest content of omega 3 fatty acids. It's best you start with sea bass or the grouper first. Eventually, you and your family will get used to the fish taste and will soon appreciate salmon.

Start it early. Start it right. You can start introducing fish to your children as young as 6 months old by giving them fish oil. You will soon be surprised that they are craving for more. And by the time that they get to eat out with you, they will order fish more.

For those who belong to the older age group, especially to those who have already created a preference for pizzas and potpies, encouraging them to eat fish may seem like a miracle. But you can still do something about it. Just stick with the tough love and be firm with what you will do. Follow the suggestions mentioned earlier and be firm on creating the menu. If it is fish, then stick to it. When they get hungry, they will eat.

So as to lengthen the lives of your children and to make them live a healthy life as well, you have to try out these great ideas. Eating fish does not just provide these benefits but it can also improve your child's behavior and mood. And you know you will benefit more from it. Just think of it this way - sooner or later you will be happy you have taught them to eat fish. And someday, your kids will appreciate it too. - 17268
