Acai Berry: Healing Properties From The Plants Of Earth

By Nicholas Page

Americans first started to notice the Brazilian acai berry around 2004. Since that time the Internet and TV offers have increased dramatically. Herbal remedies, supplements and acai products are everywhere. Because the promotion of these products has been so extensive lately, people don't quite know what to think and are hesitant to jump on this speeding bandwagon. Is this just another health fad or is there something to it? When you consider just a few of the basic ingredients of this berry - dietary fiber, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids - you would have to agree it must contain some health benefits.

By now most people know the story of red and purple grapes and the now famous French Paradox: high intake of red wines yet low rates of heart disease. This low rate of heart disease has been linked to the antioxidants in red wines. In fact the darker the grape the higher the antioxidant level. The acai berry is a very dark purple fruit and has very high levels of antioxidants. Most people who have tasted the fresh acai berry compare it to a mix of chocolate and berry, what a wonderful blend of flavors. These natural antioxidants are known to neutralize oxygen free radicals in our bodies.

Many of the claims about the health benefits of acai are due to the antioxidants. Without enough antioxidants in our system we can succumb to what is called oxidative stress. Oxygen free radicals are a natural result of cell metabolism but an excess of free radicals can damage and even kill biological cells. Free radicals have been linked to health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes and even cancer. Regularly ingesting natural antioxidants is a very good way to neutralize free radicals and promote the healing and strength of our cells thereby boosting our immune system.

Another wonderful ingredient in the acai are the polyunsaturated fatty acids. These nutrients are so important to us that our bodies are actually capable of producing them from other compounds. But there are some fatty acids our bodies cannot produce, these are the essential fatty acids. Acai berries contain some of the same essential fatty acids found in olives. The only way our bodies can get these essential nutrients is by directly eating them. Polyunsaturated fatty acids can lower our cholesterol levels which in turn improves blood circulation, lowering our blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart diseases.

Like all fruits the acai berry contains its own special makeup of natural dietary fiber. This is another source for the health claims made about this berry. It has long been known that the average American diet is low in fiber. This is the result of mass consumption of processed and fast foods. Insufficient fiber in our diets can result in improper digestion and lead to obesity as well as contributing to digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and hemorrhoids.

There are literally thousands of plants that are yet to be evaluated for their herbal and medicinal properties so it is no wonder new discoveries like this are still being made. The Brazilian acai berry really is an amazing little fruit. In this country we may not have direct access to this berry but we now have readily available to use many products and supplements containing various forms of this healing fruit. In many cases the supplements are the best way to go as the beneficial natural ingredients don't always survive human attempts at extracting and preserving their natural potency. It is important you buy from a source who knows how to preserve the potency of the ingredients. Maximum Acai Power is a great product giving you the option of trying it first before you buy. - 17268
