Apple Juice and Its Health Boosting Properties

By May Townton

Many people have discovered how juicing and drinking juice is a fantastic way to get your daily quotas of fruit and vegetables and can be incorporated successfully into any health or fitness regime. One fruit that is especially popular is apple juice. This is because there are so many different varieties, many tasty blends can be made. There are, however, some relatively unknown benefits.

Apple juice is known to help with the digestive system and help in the functioning of the kidneys. In the gastrointestinal tract, apple juice has very effective cleansing properties and so makes the juice very popular. It is also able to help detoxify and purify the bloodstream and is useful as a general tonic for the liver and skin.

Apples contain large quantities of many vitamins including carotene, vitamin B6, riboflavin, thiamine and riboflavin but not as much vitamin C as was once thought. They also contain around 16 calories per ounce of fruit, which is useful if you are on a calorie controlled plan.

The levels of vitamin C can vary quite a bit from apple to apple, and range from about 2mg to 35mg per hundred ounces. The types of apples that contain the highest levels of this vitamin are, Golden Noble, Ontario and Bramleys.

Citrus fruits such as lemons and, especially, oranges contain the highest concentrations of vitamin C. Apples, however, contain more antioxidants, like tannic acid, and minerals.

Fresh apple juice has a tendency to oxidize very quickly and can turn an unpleasant brown color. This can be reduced or prevented by putting the juice in the fridge quickly or by applying some fresh lemon juice to the drink. This has the added benefit of giving some extra flavor to the juice.

Polyphenols are another chemical that are found naturally in apples. Ongoing researching is pointing to the fact that these chemicals may help in the prevention of the dementia causing illness, Alzheimers disease. It has also been suggested that apples could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease as they contain chemicals similar to those in red wine and tea which help in the breakdown of bad cholesterol.

Apples could be considered a wonder fruit as they are not only a tasty, healthy food, that kids love, but drinking them in a juice can provide a significant boost to your health. - 17268
