Why are American's Still Growing and How did They Get So Tall

In the past 50 years height has stabilized and the average American men's height is about 5 feet 9 inches and for women its 5 feet 4 inches. The average American's height has hit the ceiling so to speak. "In terms of stature we've pretty much maxed out. Over the last generation there has been little change in height", says an anthropologist, William Leonard, at Northwestern University. There was a time when it was expected that the children were to outgrow their parents. In the 20th century in American every 20 years both children and adolescents grew about an inch and a half.

Eat Healthy

Leonard explains the reason is that most American youths now face few nutritional or health-related stresses. Most Americans have avoided diseases and have consumed enough meat and milk in their youth to reach their potential genetic height growth due to the fact that most people grow most as infants than as adolescents.

According to Leonard what leads to malnutrition and health care problems, and generations of children still growing not reaching the maximums yet are immigration population and communities where there are social economic constraints. "In ethic compositions there are large heterogeneity" says Leonard. "Asian-American and Hispanic Americans is where height increasing is still happening." Leonard also points out that height averages has more or less stabilized, but there is a small population where increase height are still happening (still not large enough to effect the overall averages).

Studies that were done more recent in the'60's and'70's has even more directly indicated the importance of nutrition to height growth. They provided nutritional growth supplements to some infants and placebo to the other infants. The children who had the supplements overwhelmingly grew taller and throughout their life and were more successful. Anthropologists analyzed a series of villages in Central America. Sixty years ago, analysis was done on European immigrants to the United States and researchers showed that immigrant children born in the US were taller and had larger heads and broader facial features than their foreign born parents and siblings. Since the'30's, studies has shown how a person's environment (which points towards nutrition) can not only affect directly a person's size, but their body height as well.

Stages of Growth

During the first two to three years of a human's life is when they grow the fastest, and they will continue to grow taller throughout childhood until about the age of 10 or 11 years of age. Leonard also points out that by the age of 17 is when girls reach their maximum height while boys tend to grow a little later reaching their tallest by 20 years of age. Since growth occurs almost exclusively in infancy and adolescence, it is critical that a person receives good nutrition to get taller.

Communities in South America that are malnourished continue growing throughout their 20's. But because they grew less during the more critical years of childhood, they still remain shorter than most Americans. Growing beyond 20 years of age is rare says Leonard. Wilt Chamberlain, America's most famous tall person, had a huge growth spurt at 15 years old and grew four inches within three months. Longevity Can Be Determined By Height

David Gunnell, an epidemiologist at England's University of Bristol, did a recent study that showed good body height meant a long life in the old days. Since increased height is a result of a person's early health and nutrition, its possible to say that its a good indicator of one's longevity.

Gunnel was able to show with his studies that the length of the bone correlates to overall height by exhuming and measuring hundreds ninth to nineteenth century arm and leg bones from English Graves. According to him the longer the bone the more likely a person lived beyond the age of 30.

Studies have shown that in the United States presidential candidates that are taller are most likely to be elected (with the exception of the recent George W. Bush) and based on hearsay evidence the taller a person is the more attractive they are and can find sexual partners easier. Being tall in the more modern time can help someone sexually and professionally be more successful.

Height's Disadvantages

There is strain to the circulatory and skeletal systems when a human is very tall.

Now that Americans have reached their genetic growth potentials, anthropologists think that its unlikely they will develop a new genetic pool to grow even taller. Which means that Americans that are very tall will continue to be perceived as...very tall. And according to Leonard, being different in which ever way, even in height, is rarely ever easy. Just as external hemorrhoids are found on the outside of the rectum, internal are found in the inside of the anus and on occasions may bleed. Blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet after bowel movement are common symptoms of internal hemorrhoids.

Sensitive lumps along with irritation and painful swelling around the anus area are all symptoms of external hemorrhoids. A symptom of internal hemorrhoids is an odd itch inside of your anus.

The best prevention for hemorrhoids is having the right diet. To ease the strain during bowel movement is to soften the stool by drinking lots of water. Consuming lots of processed food is also unhealthy. In order to prevent hemorrhoids, add some fiber to your diet. Foods like bran, fruits and vegetables will also increase your chances to prevent hemorrhoids.

Certain toilet habits will also help with avoiding hemorrhoids such as reading while your on the toilet. Sitting on the toilet for long periods of time can cause straining. So when you have a bowel movement, try to get the "job" done without reading.

The Real Deal With Thanksgiving Eating

Everyone knows that Thanksgiving is the worst eating day for everyone in the US. Anyone that is on a "Diet" is either going to blow it or will have to use every ounce of unnatural will power to not give in to the Holiday's tradition of stuffing your face until you can't move. Even more specifically for us Texans, stuffing your face until you can't move and waddling into your relative host's living room to watch the Cowboys.

So, Thanksgiving stands accused as the least healthy holiday. Like your mother used to say, "Don't hang out with the wrong crowd." Thanksgiving, as far as its effect on health, is just another day in November, it's just guilty by association. More specifically, its association with food, lots of food! Well, this is a free country, we are free to do, or eat what we want, and we are innocent until proven guilty. So let's give Thanksgiving a fair trial and see what our final verdict is.

The first witness is Turkey, the center of attention for Thanksgiving day.

5 ounces of white mean Turkey: Total Fat: 11.7g Saturated Fat: 3.2 Trans Fat: 0 Cholesterol: 107.6mg Sodium: 89.2mg Carbs: 0 Protein :40.4g

Well, it looks like Turkey has a little fat, but not saturated or trans fat, but healthy unsaturated fats. It has relatively small amounts of cholesterol, sodium and no carbs. It is loaded with protein. Protein from turkey is an excellent source because it is a complete protein with all of the necessary amino acids. It appears that turkey is not only not bad for you, but actually healthy. The Verdict: Turkey is innocent.

Next, Sweet Potatoes.

Hmm, it appears that sweet potatoes are essentially fat free, and cholesterol free. The sodium content is negligible, and so is the protein content. It does have 26.2g of GOOD carbs. Good carbs you ask? Yes, the carbohydrates found in sweet potatoes are complex carbs, meaning they digest slowly, providing your body with energy, not your "spare tire" with more "air." No fat, nothing else unhealthy, healthy source of essential carbs: The Verdict: Sweet Potatoes are innocent!

Next I would like to call to the stand, Cranberry Sauce.

Cranberry Sauce, Sweetened and Canned, 3 slices: Total Fat: .3g Cholesterol: 0mg Sodium: 49.6mg Carbs: 66.5g Sugars- 64.5.g Protein: .3g

It would seem like cranberry sauce is fat free, but think of the rules the FDA puts on fat, preservative or even trans fat free items. If an item has less than .5g per serving, then it can claim to be free of it. Just keep that in mind. Imagine that it all has .49g and that is how much fat you are consuming. Cranberry sauce has no cholesterol and a limited amount of sodium. There are tons of carbs, 64.5g from sugar to be exact. Why don't you just measure out 65g of sugar and attach it to your waistline, we can cut out the middleman that way. It would appear that cranberry sauce is guilty! At least the canned sugary kind is.

Up next, stuffing:

Stuffing, bread, prep/dry mix 1/2cup Total Fat: 8.6g Saturated Fat: 1.7g Cholesterol: 0mg Sodium: 543mg Carbs: 21.7g Sugars: 2.1g Protein: 3.2g

Stuffing does have a little bit of fat, but it's not bad fat. It is low in sodium, but also low in protein. There is a ton of sodium, but actually less than most canned or boxed goods, so it's not that bad compared to most American diets. There are a fair amont of carbs, but they are from the white bread and not sugar. It would appear that stuffing is innocent!

I've seen all I need. We have learned that turkey is actually healthy, canned cranberries are loaded with sugar, sweet potatoes are great, and stuffing isn't healthy, but isn't that bad either.

Is Thanksgiving guilty? No, it's innocent. Turkey, sweet potatoes, and stuffing might actually be our healthiest meal of the year with small healthy portions.

Now who do you think is actually guilty?

Even if you eat healthy food in excess, you will gain weight. Calories are calories no matter where they come from.

So what's the problem with Thanksgiving? We overeat. Not only do we overeat on healthy real food, but we gorge ourselves on desserts. I'm not even going to go there, we all know what we should and shouldn't be eating when it comes to dessert.

Let's stop accusing Thanksgiving, and get real with ourselves. How about this year we take responsibility for ourselves and call it quits when we know we should. We won't feel guilty, or miserable and actually enjoy our time with family. This year let's be thankful for our family and that fact that we have so many leftovers.

3. Distract yourself. I knew a world caliber wrestler that would play intense video game tournaments during his most excruciating bouts of dieting. The brain can only take on so many inputs at once. If you distract yourself, your cravings will subside.

4. Consume artificial sweeteners only when needed. These are great tools for tricking your taste buds into thinking their getting the real thing. However, you do not want to go overboard here since we still do not know if high intakes of sweeteners over long periods of time are safe.

5. Have loose leaf teas. Yerba mate is your best bet here. This tea is so powerful that it can knock out your cravings for an entire day. The only catch here is that you may have some trouble sleeping. Make sure you have the loose leaf version.

Sugar addictions can completely block your efforts for getting rid of flabby arms. If you really want to succeed here, you have to attack your sugar addiction head on. Only then will you get the sexy arms you so desperately want and deserve. - 17268
