Don't Rule Out Acai Yet

By Walter Fry

Like many of the other superfruits, the acai tree is native to hot, humid and tropical climates like those found in Central America, South America and Brazil. The purple berry that it produces has a berry-chocolate flavor to it. The inside of the palm, the soft part know as the heart of palm has been used in salads, eaten alone and in other dishes.

It has, for centuries been a staple food for civilizations in the Amazon, Brazilian, Central and other South American countries. All parts of the tree can be used for something. Nothing is wasted. The hearts of palm are harvested, eaten by the natives and exported as a delicacy to other countries. The leaves have been harvested and woven into mats, baskets, brooms and roofing thatch for years. The trunks of the trees have been chopped down and cut to use in building structures all through these countries.

The fruit has become very popular in nutritional circles, both for age-defiance and for simple, healthy dieting. Acai's proponents claim that it will help boost your metabolism while giving you all of the nutrients that your body needs. The natives of Brazil have been eating the hearts of palms and the fruit from this tree for centuries, as it has been a staple food for them passed down from generation to generation.

Many natives now grow the trees and make a living from the harvest by selling them to exporters to ship to other countries for the berries, hearts of palm, leaves and trunks. Brazil even incorporates the acai berries in soda, juice, ice cream, and other flavored drinks, including alcoholic ones. They are served chilled or at room temperature in pitchers made from gourds, and can be flavored with sugar or salt. They also provide acai now in freeze-dried and powdered forms. Seeds from the Acai Palm tree are harvested and replanted. It takes several months for seedlings to form. Extra seeds are also ground up and used to feed livestock and as organic additives for plant soil.

Recently there has been a study or two that question the nutritional value of the acai berry. First the publications indicated that it was the best known source of antioxidants, but now some comparisons are showing that the level of antioxidants are not as high as first thought. It actually falls below eleven frozen fruit juices, including the pomegranate, mango and aronia berries in comparative studies. It also fell below red wine, blueberry juice and concord grapes but was higher in comparison to orange and apple juice. It may only be on the same level of antioxidant potency with black cherry and cranberry juice if these studies can be taken at face value.

Some other studies have indicated that this berry may be a future treatment for leukemia, diabetes, heart diseases, other forms of cancer, and even high blood pressure. In fact, they are already using acai as a contrast agent during MRI's for gastrointestinal scans. The acai berry still packs quite a beneficial punch, no matter what the latest reports claim. - 17268

A couple of recent lab studies have indicated that the level of antioxidants once advertised for this berry is not as high as it was first stated. They had claimed it as being among the very highest in antioxidants, however the studies they have been performing lately in comparison to other fruits and juices, shows this berry as coming up short of the peak. It may not have as high a level of antioxidants when compared to several frozen fruit juices, red wine, strawberries, mangos, blueberries, dark-colored grapes and pomegranates. If they are correct, acai may only run on an even keel with cherries and cranberries, but is still higher in antioxidants than oranges and of course apple juice.

No matter if it has the most antioxidants or not, there are plenty of other health benefits from the acai berry to make it worthwhile. For instance, other research on acai berries indicates that it could likely help in the treatment of leukemia. The juice is already being used in some instances as a contrast in the gastrointestinal area for MRI's. Don't count it out yet, research on this tasty berry is still young and it has plenty of room left for surprises to throw at us all. - 17268

Best Way To Lose Weight? Give The Booze A Miss!

By Henry John

'Alcohol makes you fat'. How many times have you been told that? It's usually used to warn people off from drinking too much, but is it a true statement? No, it's not strictly true, alcohol doesn't make you fat, it actually prevents you from losing weight. It stops your stored energy being used. If you're looking for the best way to lose weight, it would be a very sensible thing to understand about alcohol.

When you drink alcohol, you give your body a bit of a dilemma. The energy in alcohol can't be stored because it is not a carbohydrate. What your body has to do is to covert the energy into something called acetate. Instead of then being stored as fat, it stays in the blood stream. Your body doesn't like this very much, so it uses the acetate energy first, leaving your energy that is stored as fat well alone.

It's not difficult to see why it makes sense not to drink when you're trying to lose weight. All your stored energy stays where it is. Your scales will stay put, in fact they will probably start to move steadily upwards!

What do you think is the best way to lose weight? Drinking alcohol is a habit. Too much alcohol is a bad habit. Too much food - particularly bad foods like ready meals and fast foods - is a bad habit. Losing weight is about getting rid of the bad habits that make you fat.

The sooner you become aware of your bad habits, the easier it will be to lose weight. The best way to lose weight permanently is to learn new habits, slim habits. This is the key to permanent weight loss.

The secret of permanent weight loss is change. If you are drinking alcohol you need to know exactly how much you are drinking because this will very much affect how much weight you will be able to lose. You have to make change if you are to lose weight permanently. If alcohol is one of your bad habits, then you need to recognize it and make the necessary changes. If you have the will and the resolve, you will lose weight. Remember the way to make change is to learn new habits...it works! - 17268

What is Dianabol?

By Josh Chase

More and more athletes are using steroids to help them improve their performance in sports, and even though the use of steroids is monitored in many competitions, this has not prevented athletes from abusing drugs like Dianabol.

Dianabol is a steroid that is used orally to assist boost protein metabolism. It helps out in building up proteins in the body and is thus used to help produce muscle mass. It is a tremendously potent steroid, both in the anabolic and the androgenic terms, and has very speedy results when building up muscle mass and strength in a short interval of time.

Dianabol is commonly used with inject-able testosterone products, like sustanon, to help jumpstart the muscle building process in a body while the testosterone injections help build up long term strength. It can lead to a weight gain of about two to four pounds per week, for duration of six weeks. This is caused by the growth in muscles as well as the water retention. Dianabol has high estrogenic properties, which is what leads to water retention and because of this you should have anti-estrogenic medicines on hand to prevent this from becoming something serious. It is not recommended, due to the water retention, to use Dianabol very close to competitions as the water retention hinders performance.

Dianabol, like all steroids, also have plenty of side effects. The first one is caused by its estrogenic properties, which causes liver toxicity when the drug is abused. There is a huge strain on the liver when the body is being given this drug, and thus it is important to maintain low dosages, like fifteen to twenty milligrams daily. After the Dianabol is discontinued, the liver should recover as long as the dosages were kept in the recommended range.

Since Dianabol causes both the fast muscle build up as well as water retention, it can also set off hypertension and heart rate increases. Occasionally, in severe cases, it is compulsory to give an antihypertensive medicine to the person using Dianabol.

Because of the estrogenic properties of the drug, it can cause male athletes to develop abnormally large mammary glands. It can also cause an outbreak of acne on the body, since the drug stimulates the sebaceous gland. It can also accelerate hair loss in the person taking the drug.

It is vital to imbibe a lot of water while on this prescription as it will aid the organs metabolise the drug better. Taking less water can cause pains and headaches. It is suggested that you take about one or two gallons of water a day.

Like all steroids, the intake of Dianabol is examined, especially in competitive games. Since this is a performance boosting drug, and leaves users sense happier, it can lead to over-use from time to time, and it is important to take these only under the supervision of a trained person. It is also compulsory to have anti-estrogenic medicines on hand to fight the side-effects caused by the estrogenic properties in this medicine. - 17268

Basic Truth About Abs Workout Mistakes

By Thomas Moore

Most guys want a ripped, good-looking abs for several reasons: to be able to wear body hugging clothes, be healthier, and be able to attract plenty of girls. But the path towards that beautiful fat-free tummy can get really ugly.

There are hundreds of product out now in the market and they seem to promise the same thing; fast results. But the human body is not like clay to mold and see results in a blink of an eye, you will need long-term plan for that journey and the way could be treacherous. Here are the most basic problems and their solutions in obtaining that dream six-packs in reality.

Consistency

Most guys are cool and excited in the first two weeks of the work out program; hitting the gym three times a week, doing all the basic exercises, and choosing the best diet. But most of them feel disheartened seeing still no visible results after and tendency is they would give up. We need to understand that it would take months or even years for the fat to convert into healthy-good looking muscles and two weeks won't even make up for that time percentage. Before planning on enrolling to the gym, you should set your mind that the gym will be your second home for the coming months and you need to keep on pushing no matter what. At the end, you will not only look "sexy" but you'll feel proud that you have endured the test and surely that abdominals is the fruit you reap.

Discipline

When you work out your body uses a lot of energy and water so naturally your appetite for food will skyrocket. But one of the things that make any program a success is the consumption of the right food. Most of this food will alienate your taste bud but if you're not willing to make a permanent lifestyle change, the burgers, fried chicken, sodas, and cakes in the fridge will be your everyday nightmare. This will not only jeopardize your dream abs but will also inflict depression in your system. You need discipline in this area and a strong will to avoid the temptation. Healthy food does not necessarily mean cereals, veggies, and the likes of those "tasteless" consumptions. Instead of fried chicken, why not bake it? Or swap your lunch to a salmon or salad? There are lots of easy ways to cook food if only you are willing to learn them.

Exercise

If your program says three repetitions only, then don't attempt to exceed that number thinking you'll gain more muscles if you do. Remember that your instructor is a professional and has seen this countless time so he knows the fact and he knows what would be the best training for you. Most guys often do this to fasten the results but the exact opposite happens (e.g. uneven muscle gain). Stick to your program and never facilitate because you might end up sprouting abs in your back due too poorly received workout plan. - 17268

Constipation and Natural Remedies For It

By Julieanne van Zyl

One of the most universal digestive complaints in the United States is constipation, so it's good to find some constipation remedies. This may be attributed to the conventional Western diet. Common to most folks in the U.S., it is often high in fats and processed foods and low in natural fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

The natural rate of recurrence of purging will vary from individual to individual and also from day to day. One person will have bowel movements once or more per day while others may not have them anymore than three times a week. Constipation is defined, not by the number of times a person has a bowel movement, but rather by the texture of the stool when it is passed.

Even though anyone can be affected by it, constipation is more common in women and in older individuals. Pregnant women, those who have just given birth, or anyone who has just had surgery will also be exposed to develop constipation. Medications such as pain relievers or some physical conditions such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries will also place individuals in a higher risk group.

Medications that can be used to increase the number of stools as well as improve the consistency of the stool, are readily available, but natural remedies are most recommended for improving this particular condition. Constipation is explained as a condition in which stools are hard and spherical and difficult to pass. The sufferer often feels distended or of not having completely emptied their bowels. It can be a very horrible feeling and really ruin your day.

If you propose using something other than a natural remedy to improve your condition you should ensure that you really are constipated. TV ads inundate us daily, urging us to use their products and laxative laboratories push their products vigorously. Sometimes this publicity can encourage individuals to believe they are constipated when in fact they are not. don't forget using natural remedies for constipation will not negatively impact on your health. In fact, using these natural methods will only make better your overall health.

One of the first things to do, if you think you may be constipated, is to increase your fluid intake. The stools stay soft according to the amount of water left in the stool. A dehydrated body will pull as much water as possible from the stool in order to help uphold hydration in the body. A minimum of six to eight glasses of liquid a day should be a part of every adult's diet. While almost any fluid will do the trick the most recommended one is water. Fluids that contain caffeine however will do more to dehydrate than to improve your condition.

The customary Western diet invariably does not provide enough fiber. 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day per each adult is recommended by the American Dietetic association. It's not difficult to take in those 30 grams per day if you look carefully at your diet. Half a cup of green peas will equal 5 grams, one small apple 3 grams, or a bowl of bran cereal can give you as much as 13 grams. However the fiber heavyweights are cooked dried beans, prunes, figs, raisins, popcorn, oatmeal and nuts. Another good source of fiber is the mangosteen fruit or if you cannot buy the fruit, mangosteen juice.

Daily exercise is of great benefit in the maintenance of a healthy bowel. Regular exercise will help to alleviate constipation because the continued movement helps the peristalsis in the lower intestines. Peristalsis is the motion, or movement, of the intestines that pushes the stool through to the rectum. While any form of exercise is of benefit, walking appears to be the best and is especially advantageous for pregnant women who face constipation as their babies develop.

We can also train ourselves to go to the toilet. We tend to choose to go when it's convenient for us to go. However, habitually prolonging the urge to go, can lead ultimately to constipation. It is never, never too late to improve your bowel habits. A gastric reflex which is activated approximately 20 minutes after each meal, especially heavy meals, will subtly send a signal. So choose a meal, any meal, and every day after that meal go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet for at least 10 minutes. Wait for 20 to 30 minutes following that meal before going. It won't be long before you will begin to create the habit of evacuating at the same time every day.

Should these dietary and lifestyle changes not be successful, individuals may choose to add a little assistance. Eating a half a cup of sunflower seeds every day will help to increase the fiber. They are tasty and will help move the stool along. Whole wheat bread, bran and even oatmeal, horseradish, dried figs and plums will help the problem.

Pelvic floor dysfunction which is a condition in which the pelvic floor muscles do not work properly and do not permit the bowels to empty properly, is sometimes the cause of constipation in individuals. Biofeedback therapy helps teach those individuals how to coordinate the muscles and it improves the ability to go to the toilet.. Although biofeedback has only recently been explored as a treatment, the results appear to be promising. For example, after six months of biofeedback sessions, 43 of 54 biofeedback patients found them more effective than laxatives. Benefits appeared to last for at least two years.

Constipation over a long period of time will ultimately lead to the development of hemorrhoids and anal fissures, which are not only painful but can also make worse the constipation. They do this by narrowing the opening and not allowing as much stool through with each evacuation. Straining can also raise blood pressure and lower the heart rate which can result in elderly patients blacking out and falling off the toilet.

If these methods are not successful in alleviating your constipation and its linked problems you should seek the care and advice of your primary care doctor or health care practitioner. - 17268

Erythritol: What Is It?

By Scott Davis

If you have tried other manmade sugar substitutes or are worried about the long-term damage these chemicals might be doing to your body, you now have another choice. Erythritol is a sugar substitute but unlike sucralose and aspartame which are made from chemicals, erythritol is a natural sweetener. In fact, erythritol has been used in Japan since the 1980s. The USDA approved erythritol for use in the United States in 1990.

Erythritol occurs naturally in different fruits like grapes, pears and melons. It can also be found in some types of mushrooms and in foods that have a fermentation process. Things like wines, beers and cheeses. Over the course of a normal day almost everyone will eat something that naturally contains at least a small amount of erythritol.

Erythritol is produced by combining a sucrose or dextrose base with water and then fermenting it with a natural culture. This process is very similar to the way yogurt is made. Erythritol is very different from other types of sugar alcohols. Unlike the others, erythritol has zero calories and none of the laxative-type effects that are associated with other sugar alcohols.

Most of the artificial sweeteners available today are many times sweeter than sugar. The opposite is true with erythritol. It is only seventy-percent as sweet as sugar and in some tests has only been as high as 40-60% as sweet. That means people who substitute it teaspoon for teaspoon with sugar will either have to get used to foods that are not as sweet or add more erythritol. Keep that in mind if you decide to bake with this product. You can also mix erythritol with sugar or other sugar replacements.

The biggest, and coolest, difference between erythritol and other sweeteners is that erythritol has zero effect on the glycemic index. That makes it a huge hit with diabetics. With erythritol both glucose and insulin levels remain unaffected. In research tests, it was also highly tolerated, up to one gram for each kilogram of body weight. Very good news for diabetics.

Erythritol has some other benefits as well. It is absorbed into the bloodstream and then secreted in the urine. Studies have shown that ninety-percent of it is excreted from the body in urine within twenty-four hours. Because it moves quickly through the small intestine and not slowly like other sugar alcohols, there is much less chance of erythritol having the same laxative effects many people experience with sugar alcohols, such as isomalt, maltitol or xylitol. It also does not mix with acids in the mouth to cause tooth decay.

It is hard to find erythritol in supermarkets. It isn't something a lot of stores are carrying yet. But it can be ordered from health food stores and is most commonly available on the internet. It comes in both powdered, granulated, and liquid forms. Erythritol is also very popular in baking, especially where other sweeteners just don't cut it, like with chocolate. The only reason you don't see erythritol on the contents labels of more reduced-calorie foods is that it is expensive to make. - 17268

Advice For Obtaining The Right Water Purifier

By Chris Channing

Water purifiers are becoming popular as more studies come forth that suggest that city and town water may not be as healthy as we always thought. This is especially true for travelers who may not even have a water source that can compare to what we are all accustomed to. With the many models available, it can be tough to find the right portable water purifier for you.

There are many applications where a portable water purifier would be needed. A prime example would be when traveling to a new country in which may have different water purification standards than of one's home country. United States citizens are sometimes warned to not drink water from the country of Mexico, for instance, since differences in purification processes may cause travelers to become sick and induce vomiting.

Water purifiers work based on their method, but the most popular method is through using ultraviolet rays to disrupt DNA of any harmful bacteria or parasites. This is able to nullify the vast majority of all threats that would reach the mouth of a traveler or hiker. Other methods may use chemicals to help purify even the murkiest of waters, although these tend to be temporary solutions that aren't always consumer-friendly.

If money is no object, there are many neat little upgrades that can be tacked onto a portable water purifier. The most popular is the solar energy upgrade, which allows the unit to recharge an internal batter based on the energy supplied to it from the Sun. This is great for times when water may not be readily available and when batteries are just as inaccessible. Expect to pay more money, but it's money well spent.

With the recent innovations, it doesn't take long at all for water to be purified. Some fast models will be able to create safe water to drink in as little as a couple of minutes. Some methods such as chemical sterilization may require that the traveler wait even longer for the potency of the chemicals to die down or for them to interact with the water. Some water pump models will also be a pain to operate- the best course of action is to obtain a portable purifier with UV sterilization.

Times are changing from a decade ago, when water purifiers demanded a traveler carry around a bulky pump or harsh chemicals that left a bad aftertaste. With ultraviolet light technologies, we can now have a hand-held device that does the same thing faster, better, and all without the odd taste of chemicals.

Closing Comments

Camping stores and sporting goods stores are the best bet for finding a water purifier. Internet store are also a good place to search if you are looking for something specific. Prices are also generally better on the Internet, where more selection is available to go through. - 17268

Get Healthy Juice with Orange Juice Juicers

By Randal Pike

Nothing can compare to freshly squeezed juice and no other appliance does the job more efficiently than orange juice juicers. They are the best in extracting the most juice possible from the fruit so that all the nutrients are preserved. The end result is a great tasting and healthy drink every time.

Orange juice juicers come in different sizes and styles, so there are certain things to look for when shopping for one that meets your needs and budget. The most inexpensive are manual orange juice juicers. They are easy to use and get the job done, but the results depend on your strength since you are manually doing the squeezing. Electric orange juice juicers require less effort and you get great results every time. Prices vary depending on features. One time-saving feature to look for is an automatic pulp ejection so there's no need to frequently stop the machine to remove the pulp.

There is a difference between orange juice juicers any other juicers. Orange juice juicers are designed to handle citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons and grapefruits. Electric citrus juicers cost less than other juicers and work much like a manual reamer. They get the job done fast and efficiently. Other juicers might not be able to handle citrus fruits.

Most electric orange juice juicers have the same components, a motor, a feeder, a bowl or reservoir for catching the juice, a squeezer or reamer for extracting the juice, and a filter grid. Look for models that have a high speed motor and are easy to operate and clean. Since most of a fruit's health benefits are in its skin and pulp, look for a juicer with adjustable pulp levels so you have the option of how much pulp you want in your juice.

Orange juice juicers are known by many names according to their functions. A centrifugal juicer extracts juice by chopping and spinning, while a masticator or extractor mashes the fruit for the highest yield of juice. On the higher priced end are triturating juicers which operate on twin gears and grind up fruits, vegetables, nuts and other raw foods.

Orange juice juicers are well worth the investment when you consider how much you pay on a weekly basis for supermarket juices that often contain only a small percentage of real fruit juice, along with lots of unhealthy sweeteners and other additives. Fresh squeezed is the way to go when you consider all the health nutrients realized through juicing.

Although they are called orange juice juicers, they can be used for other fruits besides oranges. Any fruit, and even vegetables, can be juiced. You can even juice a combination of various fruits and vegetables to create a delicious juice blend full of important vitamins and nutrients. Orange juice, in particular, provides numerous health benefits, among them vitamin C, potassium and fiber. The skin and pulp of fruit hold a lot of these nutrients, so orange juice juicers that retain as much of them as possible are the better choice.

No other juice drink compares to a freshly squeezed glass of juice. With orange juice juicers, a healthy drink is within reach in a matter of seconds. Being able to control what you eat and drink is essential to good health and wellness. When you can get juice from fresh fruit rather than a carton, you know you are getting the most natural, fresh juice that supplies great health benefits. - 17268

Why is the Acai Berry a Superfruit?

By Fred Skipp

The acai berry has certainly gained and retained its popularity. People are still crazy about it because they believe that the acai berry contains almost all supplements, vitamins, and minerals that their bodies will ever need. Some people spend a lot of money buying vitamins and food supplements but they are not natural and therefore they are not as good as eating the acai berry.

Nowadays, most people have heard of the term antioxidants and free radicals. The acai berry is high in antioxidants that are effective in fighting free radicals especially peoxynitrite free radicals. Some scientists say that the acai berry has the highest amount of antioxidants when compared to other fruits but the jury is still out on that fact. No matter which fruit has the highest level of antioxidants, the acai berry is no doubt one of the top performers.

There are many types of antioxidants in the acai berry such as anthocyanins. The main anthocyanins in the acai berry are called cyanidin-3-glucoside or C-3-G and cyanidin-3-rutioside. There are many more antioxidants in the acai berry such as polyphenols which are found largely in the pulp of the acai berry. These antioxidants are effective in fighting free radicals.

A diet is not complete without essential fatty acids and the acai berry has plenty of fatty acids that your body needs to be healthy. In fact, the little acai berry contains more fat in it than other things. By measuring the dry weight of the acai berry, you will find that 50 percent of more of the berry weight is fat, mostly monounsaturated fats but there are some polyunsaturated fats. The fatty acids in the acai berry is similar to that of olive oil.

Protein is very important in your diet. Unlike other fruits, the acai berry is high in protein. The acai berry's protein profile is similar to an egg. But, bear in mind that the protein content can vary from an acai berry to another. Some acai palm trees bear acai fruits that have higher protein content than others depending on the condition which the trees grow in.

Vitamins are also largely present in the acai berry. An acai juice is usually a good source of vitamin E. Most of the vitamins are found in the pulp of the acai berry. Vitamin E work with other antioxidants to combat free radicals and keep the body healthy. There are other vitamins in the acai berry beside vitamin E such as vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C.

It is not surprising that people eating the acai berry or drinking the acai berry juice can stay healthy and strong. The acai berry is packed full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals as well as fiber and everything else that we have already discussed. You will find that you have lots of energy when eating the acai berry. The berry is also low in sugar which makes it even healthier. - 17268

Even though is can keep water in our body, but it's not good if want to build muscle mass. It can also boost the absorption of amino acids and carbohydrate storage in our body. Because it can increase the level of fluid in your cells, it can improve your joint leverage and give you more physical strength and allow you to have fewer muscle strains and injuries to soft tissues when you weight train. It will also enhance the responsiveness of muscles to insulin.

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
