Foods that contain protein and fats are actually priced cheaper than greens and common vegetables. The U.S imbalance of food pricing has stemmed from the industrial farming practices over the many years of access that has led to great savings from the scale increases in farming over the years. Demand for animal protein was so great that somewhere in the 1970s the price of meats became cheaper than the price of vegetables and common stables like bread and potatoes.

The main problem is that Americans who are trying to save on the costs of food are still going about purchasing their food items at the same places they are used too, namely supermarkets. Supermarkets simply do not provide for people who are looking for quality foods at a bargain basement price. The cheaper meats are normally low in digestible protein and high in fat. The cheap carbohydrate products have some of the highest G.Is and the cheap drinks are almost always filled to the brim with sugar to make them taste better. This is a perfect combination for heart disease and diabetes.

Just to make matters worst are the huge number of fast food restaurants and diners which offer some of the cheapest meals available. Although the immediate response would be to lower ones pickiness when it comes to food, having cheap meals at the diner of at fast food restaurants are extremely unhealthy. There will be a marked deterioration of your health through eating too much fatty meats and also not eating enough fresh green vegetables to provide vital nutrients like vitamins, fiber and anti-oxidants.

Although it may seem at first that you have to make the choice between either maintaining your health of keeping your wallet happy, the decision doesnt have to be like that. You can get foods that are good for your health while still keeping your wallet happy. The only down-side is that you have to put extra effort in looking for quality foods. For the best health you should aim for freshness, leanness and fiber in your diet. You can get very fresh vegetables from farmer markets at extremely competitive prices. Cheap cuts of meat that are still lean can be obtained from your small-time butchers at very decent price too. It is all just a matter of looking around and finding foods that are nutritional and not simply relying on what supermarkets are able to provide.

It is never a good idea to give up year health simply for the savings of a few dollars. The moral of the story is not to accept food that is cheap but of lower quality. If you look around you will be able to find foods that are both cheap and high quality. I Love My Slowcooker, But I'm On A Low-Glycemic Diet

This is the year I decided to try a low-glycemic diet. It's working so far, but I'm starting to miss my crock pot meals, and so is my family. I'm sure they're getting tired of eating my "diet" food and would like us all to sit down together and have a nice, hot meal. My crock pot has always been one of my favorite ways of cooking, but now what?

That was my dilemma this year when I made my New Year's resolution. Okay, I'm on my diet, but do I have to give up my crock pot? No siree! Here are a few recipes that I've tried out on my family with great results, and with my diet intact!

Asian Inspired Beef and Snow Peas

You'll need about a 2 1/2 lb. boneless Round Steak, cut into 4 pieces. Place the pieces in your crock pot. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of soy sauce, about 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger, 2 cloves of garlic, grated or minced, and 2 tablespoons canola oil. Pour your mixture over the steak and put on the crock pot cover. Cook this on low for about 6 hours. Give the meat the fork-test to see if it's nice and tender. If not, let it go a bit longer. Then serve alongside hot, cooked snow peas tossed with sauted mushrooms for a perfectly delicious Asian inspired meal.

Lazy Day Split Pea Soup

For a simple soup, throw a 1 lb. bag of split peas into your crock pot along with 2 lbs. of boiled ham, diced up, 3 cloves garlic, minced or grated, 1 medium onion, diced pretty small, 3 ribs celery, finely diced, 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, 7 cups fresh cold water, and 5 chicken bouillion cubes. Set your crock pot to low and let cook for 6 to 7 hours. You may want to BRIEFLY lift the lid on this to give it a stir 2 or 3 times during the cooking time as the split peas will tend to settle.

3 Bean n' Beef Chili

Brown 2 lbs. of lean ground beef, and drain any excess fat. While the meat is browning, dice 2 medium size onions, 1 green pepper, and 2 ribs of celery and throw it all into the crock pot. Grate 3 cloves of garlic on top of the vegetables. Pour in 2 (16 ounce size) cans of diced tomatoes, 2 regular size cans of garbanzo beans, 1 can of butter beans, and 1 can of black beans, all drained first but not rinsed. Then add a 15 ounce can of chicken broth, 3 teaspoons chili powder (or more if you're an adventurous eater), 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of salt. You may want a bit more salt, so taste the mix later as it cooks. Now, add the browned ground beef, stir up a little, cover the crock pot and let cook on LOW for about 6 hours. I serve this in big bowls with a dollop of low fat yogurt and a sprinkle of chives. You can garnish with whatever your diet allows!

If you have tried, and failed, diets in the past, you know that the main reason for failure is bland food and lack of family participation. When you've got a bubbling hot and hearty meal in the crock pot, you and your family can hardly feel deprived! Flavorful and filling dishes are the secret to staying on a diet. Try these recipes on your family without telling them that you're on a diet and see what happens. They'll be asking for repeats and be none-the-wiser and you'll be sticking to your diet! But, my crock pot has become a loyal companion in my kitchen, so what else could I do but figure out a few family-friendly meals that I, and my diet, can live with. Which is Better for Me -- Low Fat or Low Carb?

I've finished the last leg of my journey back to Long Island, and arrived safe and sound late last Friday. Last night, while checking the emails, I found a lot of letters about no fat and low fat and and low carb diets.

First of all, no fat diets are dangerous, and you really shouldn't even attempt anything like that except under strict medical supervision. Even then, I'm hard pressed to think of why it would be necessary.

Your body needs fat to flourish, and the only question still being debated is, how much? One thing we know for sure is that it is more than the medical community believed for almost four decades.

The same thing is true about carbohydrates. For decades, the prevailing wisdom was high carbs and low fat. You can see where that theory has gotten us.

The most important word in any diet is BALANCE.

When we speak of balance, we are speaking of the balance of fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

A very important point that I have repeated time and time again is this: foods that are closest to their natural state are the most healthy for you. Baked apples are close to the natural state of fresh apples, while Apple Jacks cereal is not. Fresh grilled fish is close to its natural state, but frozen fish sticks covered in fatty breading are not.

Simply put, packaged food is not a good option. It generally contains ingredients that are highly unhealthy, with trans fats and high fructose corn syrup being two of the biggest culprits.

Additionally, almost all low fat foods have an elevated sugar content. They are made to be overly sweet so that they appeal to the taste buds. This same process is used in no-fat foods. Take a look at the label and you will find high levels of either sugar or a sugar substitute.

Low carb almost always involves a sugar substitute too, and personally, I think it always tastes terrible. You have to convince yourself that it tastes good in order to eat it. No, thanks.

A good rule to follow involving packaged foods is to choose foods that are not combined with other ingredients. The best way to gain control of your diet is to start slowly, one meal at a time. My friend Nate has some words of wisdom on the subject: "Practice push ups instead of doing sit downs." His message is that when you are full you should push up from the table, not sit down in order to eat more.

Last week a friend of mine asked me to take a look at a website about bodybuilding.
